The licenced practical nurse (LPN) received the 2008 Excellence in Clinical Practice Award from the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia.

 "It was quite the surprise and quite the honour, actually," said Ms Ballard. "I felt extremely honoured and touched. It was reassuring to know that what I and so many other LPNs do truly makes a difference." The award recognizes an LPN for their outstanding ability to provide quality patient care. Among the criteria for receiving the award is demonstrating a high degree of caring and compassion in relation to direct patient care.

 Ms Ballard currently works with Dr. Bronwen Jones in Hubbards. Dr. Jones has what is known as a collaborative primary care practice for seniors. Ms Ballard not only graduated with her LPN diploma, she furthered her studies to specialize in seniors. She completed a certificate in gerontology in 2007.

 "I feel a connection with each senior I interact with, hearing about their life, their trials and tribulations. It is very rewarding to me to be able to make a difference in their quality of life," said Ms Ballard about why she chose to specialize in care of the elderly.

 Pharmacist Wendy Moscovitch nominated Ms Ballard. Ms Moscovitch said although she has only worked with Ms Ballard for a short while, she noted her commitment to improving the lives of seniors is impressive.

 "She has the ability to know when to probe a little deeper … and when to just hold someone and let them cry," said Ms Moscovitch.

 In addition to her work with Dr. Jones, Ms Ballard helps organize Geriatric Day in Lunenburg to assist health care providers in learning more about seniors and their unique needs.

 "Tammy demonstrates a passion for care of her patients that goes beyond the individuals to improving the quality of care for all seniors in the South Shore health district through educational opportunities for caregivers," added Ms Moscovitch.
