MAHONE BAY - Things are getting loud in Mahone Bay, but maybe not for long.

 The town is researching the possibility of instituting a noise bylaw to deal with complaints about loud vehicles roaring up and down its streets.

 At a meeting September 25, Councillor Virginia Uhlman, who chairs the police advisory board, said there have been a number of complaints in recent months.

 "We're not the sleepy little town we used to be," she said.

 "Lately, for example, on Pleasant Street it's just like the Indy 500. There are no flaps on the mufflers and they're just going like crazy and there's motorbikes and there's loud music," she added.

 There have also been complaints about people congregating in some areas and making noise until the early morning hours.

 "I think people have a right to be concerned about that. They've got families and children who are trying to sleep and it's a problem," Councillor Uhlman said.

 Council agreed to have CAO Jim Wentzell research noise bylaws from other towns and report back, hopefully by late November.

 If elected officials opt for a noise bylaw, it would be late January or early February before it could be approved and enacted.
