Beachcombers asked to watch for Swissair debris

COUNTY - The RCMP are asking beachcombers to keep their eyes open in case they stumble across any debris from Swissair Flight 111.
Although there have been no recent reports of wreckage from the September 2 crash washing up on local shorelines, officials issued the request last week to people walking along the coast of St. Margarets and Mahone Bays.
"With more tourists in the area and more people walking along the beaches, if they see anything they think might be wreckage we'd like to know about it. We'd obviously like to retrieve it," RCMP spokesman Sgt. Wayne Noonan said.
Anyone who finds anything they think might be debris is asked to note the time and exact place where it was found. They should then contact the nearest detachment of the RCMP or call toll free to 1-800-272-9569.
"We'd be more than happy to go look at it and make that determination ourselves," Sgt. Noonan said.
About 10 per cent of the downed jetliner has not yet been retrieved from the crash site between Peggy's Cove and East Ironbound. Recovery efforts are continuing.
The Transportation Safety Board investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
