Giant Tiger to hire 30 people, opens in Bridgewater this fall

by Keith Corcoran

Ottawa-based discount chain Giant Tiger roars into Bridgewater this November at the Gateway Plaza.
The national discount chain making its home in the Gateway Plaza plans to hire 30 people and open this fall.

"The opening date for business is November 13," said Dave Thorpe, marketing vice-president for Giant Tiger.

The Ottawa-based chain has 195 locations across Canada and employs 6,500. While the company had been scouting out possible locations to build a new outlet in Bridgewater, Mr. Thorpe said a vacancy that came up at the Dominion Street mall suited their needs.

"New construction is expensive and in order to provide our customers with low, everyday prices in an inviting environment, we prefer to lease and occupy existing buildings," he said.

"We also wanted to ensure that we could be of help in boosting sales and traffic for the rest of the plaza's tenants."

The Rewards department store occupied that section of the plaza for the past several years. The store and the plaza's landlord weren't able to reach a long-term lease deal, prompting the end of Rewards' agreement on July 31.

A renovation will take place to accommodate the 1,170 square metres Giant Tiger plans to occupy.

"There will be a complete demolition of the interior of the space by the landlord," Mr. Thorpe said, "and the tenant will be building a demising wall, offices, washrooms, flooring, ceiling tiles, installing its usual wall-mounted and floor-mounted fixtures and refrigeration equipment.

Store officials visited Lunenburg County last year to examine the marketplace.

Mr. Thorpe said Giant Tiger "sees Bridgewater and other communities as being underserviced for the types of goods and services" provided by the company.

Giant Tiger, which bills itself as the low-price destination for fashion, food and fun, has existing Nova Scotia stores in the communities of Truro and Halifax. Another location is opening this fall in New Minas.
