Local company spruces up city cemetery's Field of Honour

by Keith Corcoran

COUNTY - Veterans Affairs Canada has awarded Lunenburg's DeMone Monuments and Granite Products a deal to spruce up the Field of Honour at Halifax's Fairview Lawn Cemetery.

The company will be providing labour, material and equipment for fixing up and levelling the foundations where flat veterans' markers have become sunken and difficult to read at the Windsor Street cemetery.

 The tender is worth $36,853.

There are 109 markers that require cleaning, new foundations or alignment, said Veterans Affairs spokesman Simon Forsyth.

"Foundations will be installed under the markers, and the marker will then be installed on the foundation, flush to the ground," he said. "The foundations will improve the stability and visibility of the veterans' grave markers, especially where sinkage has taken place."

DeMone Monuments will also be noting and tracking the original locations of markers as they're removed. The company will install a granular fill wrapped in geotextile fabric under each foundation in 150-millimetre layers and compact it before placing the foundation, Veterans' Affairs said.

The new or repaired markers will be put back down on granite block that's lying on granular fill "ensuring that the marker and foundation are solid and level," said Mr. Forsyth.

DeMone is tasked with removing debris associated with the job and completing any landscaping required to bring the site to its original state.

The county firm is considered one of the largest monument manufacturing companies in the province.

Granite for memorials is cut, designed, lettered and sandblasted at the manufacturing plant in Lunenburg where its head office is located, off Victoria Road.

It also has offices and displays in Bridgewater and Bedford, off Victoria Road and the Bedford Highway, respectively.

Detailed information about the company can be found at http://www.demonemonuments.ca on the internet.
