Hill 'n' Dale South Shore Exhibition results

 The 2007 4-H year has been a busy one for all members and leaders. With the participation in the South Shore Exhibition 4-H competitions, many of our members have qualified to participate in the 2007 Nova Scotia 4-H show in Windsor, NS, September 28 to 30.

 In the project judging competitions the following members achieved the top results. In livestock - beef, Adam Fancy, junior - 1st and reserve champion; dairy, Leah Cook, junior - 1st; Kayla Palmer, senior - 2nd and reserve champion; sheep - Jason Fancy, junior - 1st and champion; cavy - Holly Laird, junior - 1st and reserve champion; light horse - Dominque Blais, senior - 1st and champion.

 Life skills projects - floriculture - Conrad Getson, junior - 1st; Nicholas Gear, senior - 1st and champion; woodworking - Benjamin Cook, senior - 1st and champion; welding - Benjamin Cook, senior - 1st and champion; fisheries - Lucas Wile, junior - 1st and reserve champion; Mark Smith, senior - 1st and champion; scrapbooking - Tiffany Whynot, senior - 1st; first aid - Adam Fancy, junior - 1st and champion; Gwyn Mason, senior - 1st and reserve champion; foods - Hailey Stapleton, junior - 1st and reserve champion; Benjamin Cook, senior - 1st and champion; cake decorating - Gwyn Mason, senior - 2nd and reserve champion; Abby Cook, junior - 1st; crafts - Abby Cook, junior - 1st and champion.

 Livestock exhibits for conformation competition. Dairy, Jersey calf - intermediate class, Luke Smith - 1st; senior calf class - Jason Fancy - 1st; Holstein, junior calf - Jessica Lohnes - 1st; intermediate calf - Jordie Veinot - 1st; summer yearling - Hillary Gear - 1st; junior yearling - Nicholas Gear - 1st.

 Beef, intermediate heifer - Adam Fancy - 1st; senior heifer class - Michael Briand - 1st. Rabbit - Jason Fancy - 1st, 4 showroom, Florida white senior buck; Kayla McCarthy - 1st, 6 showroom, junior doe. Sheep, Holly Laird - 1st, ewe lamb, North Country Cheviot. Dog obedience - Kayla McCarthy, senior - 1st, pre-novice obedience. Light horse - Michelle Reeves, senior - 2nd pleasure and road hack, English; Michelle Reeves, senior - 2nd and to 4-H show, western pleasure and trail; Holly Laird, junior - 2nd and to 4-H show, western pleasure and barrels.

 Showmanship competitors. Light horse, junior showmanship - 1st and 4-H show - Holly Laird; senior showmanship - 1st and 4-H show - Dominique Blais. Rabbit, junior showmanship - Leah Cook - 1st, champion and to 4-H show.

 Lifeskill project articles representing Lunenburg County at 4-H show or received 1st place. First aid - Gwyn Mason, senior - 1st, champion and to 4-H show, level 3, first-aid kit; Adam Fancy, junior - 1st, champion and 4-H show, level 1, first-aid kit; Gwyn Mason, senior - 1st, reserve champion and to 4-H show, first-aid display; Adam Fancy, junior - 1st, reserve champion and 4-H show, first-aid poster.

 Recycling competition - Kailey Hubley, senior - 2nd, reserve champion and 4-H show. Veterinary science - Danielle Briand, senior - 2nd, reserve champion and 4-H show with a written report; Laura Gow, senior - 1st, champion and 4-H show with poster. Art - Hailey Stapleton, junior - 1st, champion and 4-H show with art and drawing; Danielle Briand, senior - 1st, champion and 4-H show with art. Floriculture - Luke Smith, junior - 1st, reserve champion and 4-H show with specialty item, a planter; woodworking - Lucas Wile, junior - 1st, champion and 4-H show with a shelf. Foods - Katelyn Lohnes, junior - 1st, champion and 4-H show with rolls; Kelly Cunningham, junior - 1st, reserve champion and 4-H show with muffins; Kailey Hubley, senior - 1st, reserve champion and 4-H show with bread.

 Crafts - Hannah Cook, senior - 1st and to 4-H show with tole painting; Kailey Hubley, senior - 1st, reserve champion and 4-H show with pottery; Abby Cook, junior - 1st, champion and 4-H show with water painting. Sewing - Leah Cook, junior - 1st, champion and reserve and 4-H show with jacket and pants, respectively. Scrapbooking - Hannah Cook, senior - 1st, reserve champion, 4-H show. Cake decorating - Abby Cook, junior - 1st and 4-H show with tip board; Jessica Lohnes, junior -1st, champion and 4-H show with marzipan cookies.

 Members with first place results in lifeskill projects. Fisheries (not a 4-H show project) - Luke Smith, junior - 1st, reserve champion with salmon flies display; Mark Smith, senior - 1st in collection of trout flies and 1st and reserve champion, specialty item of making your own fishing gear; Lucas Wile, junior - 1st with knot board; Luke Smith, junior - 1st with trout fishing poster; Mark Smith, senior - 1st, stay sharp poster.

 Scrapbooking - Kailey Hubley and Chad Herman - senior, 1st specialty item; Natasha Herman junior - 1st specialty item; Tiffany Whynot, Gwyn Mason and Jordie Veinot, senior - 1st, scrapbook, reserve champion and gift cards, respectively.

 Photography - Julie Berkshire, senior - 1st, flush mount photo; Leah Cook, junior - 1st, photo story; Lucas Mader, senior - 1st, level 3, photo album and colour print display; Mark Smith and Hannah Cook, senior - 1st, level 1 photo album and Hannah's 1st, reserve champion photo and framed photo.

 Foods - Dominique Blair, senior - 1st, recipe binder; Jerilyn Nowe, junior - 1st, specialty item, cookies and recipe binder. Crafts - Abby Cook, junior - 1st, garden stone; Kailey Hubley, senior - 1st, cross stitch. Welding - Benjamin Cook, senior - 1st, tool rack. Woodworking - Benjamin Cook, senior - 1st, lamp; Conrad Getson and Lucas Wile, junior - 1st, night stand and lawn furniture, respectively. Cake decorating - Gwyn Mason, senior - 1st, royal icing flowers, level 3. Sewing - Hailey Stapleton, junior -1st, sewing bag. First aid - Gwyn Mason, senior - 1st, first-aid poster.

 Our club members also had time to participate in open light horse, dairy and beef classes, host a few counties in tug-of-war and helped work in the 4-H canteen. It was also time to sit and talk with fellow members. Although very tired after seven days, everyone enjoyed themselves.

 In Old Timers Showmanship, Andre Morine was first and Deanna Gear was second.

 The 4-H tractor-driving competition saw our team place second to Livewires. Now the members will relax and enjoy summer.

 4-H registration will be September 15, 9-11 a.m. at the Wileville fire hall. All young people ages 9 to 21 years are welcome.

 Condolences to the families and friends in the death of James Laing Sr. of Bridgewater, and James Daniels, Laconia.

 A coffee brunch and layette shower was held at the home of Cheryl Keddy at Petite Riviere on July 31. An outdoor brunch was enjoyed by all. Proceeds for Sarah's Ladies Aid, Calvary church.

 Congratulations to Lt.-Col. Andrew Jayne, Ottawa, on his recent promotion and graduation from joint command and staff program at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto. Andrew is the son of Marguerite and Holley Jayne, Middlewood.

 Recent visitors with Mary and Marjorie Wamboldt were Marilyn Wamboldt, New Brunswick; Roselyn Batt, Dartmouth; and Helen Barteaux, Valley.

 Murray Robar thought he was stopping at a bake sale at the community hall on Sunday afternoon. Instead he was surprised by a large group of family and friends gathered to help him celebrate his 65th birthday. It turned out to be a wonderful afternoon.

 Visitors with Garnet and Viola Jodrey on Friday were Troy, Jodie and Paige Acker, White Rock; Orlie and Marieta Veno, Factorydale; and Frank Edwards.

 Troy and Jodie Acker were weekend visitors with Roland and Linda Acker.

 The final card party was held on July 26 with seven tables in play. Winners were, ladies' high, Darlene Rhodenizer; second was tied between Violet Eisnor and Ruby Bezanson; mens' high, Ray Leslie; second, Mellie Robar; traveller, Anne Nelson; half take, Anne Nelson; and door prize, Gary Henderson. Parties will resume in September.

 We appreciate everyone who helped make these socials so successful.

 On Monday evening, Rhena Joudrey, Sandra Joudrey and Theresa Hawkesworth accompanied Janice Wilson to Coldbrook and Wolfville to visit with Christine Farrar, who was visiting from Ottawa with the RCMP Musical Ride. It was great to see her again.

 The craft gals have finished the quilt project under the mentoring and skill of Ruby Bezanson. Proceeds from the sale of tickets will go to help with the siding of the hall. The draw for the quilt will be made at the community fair to be held on August 25.

 Beulah Wagner, New Germany, visited with Helen Daniels on Monday while Ella Slauenwhite, Stanburne, visited with Garnet and Viola Jodrey.

 Rhena Joudrey and Marion Wilson called on Betty Scharf, Bridgewater, on Tuesday.
