Mmm … beefy!

In March of this year, the Province of Nova Scotia unveiled a plan to help beef up Nova Scotia's beef industry by nudging the sector toward greater economic self-sustainability.

A total of $1.9 million will be put directly through to producers through the Department of Agriculture's programs and business risk management division.

The investment stemmed from a Nova Scotia Cattle Producers (NSCP) presentation to the Department of Agriculture, which highlighted a number of priorities necessary for a revitalized beef industry in our province.

Agriculture Minister Brooke Taylor brought the industry concerns to his colleagues in government, who in turn supported the request for funds.

Greg Sheffer, the president of the NSCP, said the province's investment signifies the beginning of what will hopefully be a bull future for Nova Scotia's beef farmers.

"This financial support demonstrates the government's commitment to the province's beef sector," Mr. Sheffer said.

He added that the NSCP intends to have a specific strategic plan in place by June to chart the development of the industry.
