Home invasion trial set for July

Accused robber still waiting in jail

COUNTY - A man accused of robbing a West Dublin senior has a new lawyer, but will now have to wait in jail until July for a trial date.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jonathan Joseph Arenburg is charged with robbery and being unlawfully in a dwelling house in connection with a September 29, 2009, home invasion.

An 80-year-old man was robbed after two people allegedly walked into his home, demanded cash and took money from his wallet. They pushed the senior to the floor before fleeing.

Mr. Arenburg was arrested for the crime last May and has remained in jail ever since. Two hearings into the allegations were delayed last year after he parted ways with two different lawyers.

He was back in court January 5 with his new lawyer, Geoff Newton, who confirmed that the case will remain in the provincial court for trial.

However, because the Crown suggested that hearing will likely take three days, the earliest available start date is July 11.

Judge Gregory Lenehan suggested an earlier date might be made available if the two sides can find a way to shorten the trial.

Meanwhile, Mr. Newton said "some resolution discussions are going on," so it's possible the case will be back on the docket sooner.

Mr. Arenburg previously served a three-year prison term for a pair of 2005 robberies, one of which involved the same victim.
